Evaluating the Preliminary Task

For our preliminary task we were asked to go and film a short piece showing how we can demonstrate different shot types like, match on action, shot reverse shot and also make sure we stick to the 180 degree rule. When we began to film i took the role of using the camera, making sure we got the different shot types in the task. We uses shot reverse shot, match on action and showing we can keep to the 180 degree rule to show the views that we can use different shots and angles to make our task better.

I was happy with our final result but like anything there is always room for improvement so we could have probably done better on some elements of the task. I think we could have improved on the location because we filmed it in a busy room so we could have probably done it in a quieter space to make the dialogue better.I think our group worked very well together, we all put in a fair amount of effort and all put good idea into the task. I feel quite confident using the camera now, i didn't at the start because i had never used a camera like that before and thought it would be very difficult but the more practice you have with the camera the better and more confident you become.

The thriller genre is very popular throughout the film industry and these two films also demonstrate this type of genre. Insomnia and Memento both have similar clues on how they are thrillers, they are both very dark, build up tension and have a gradual build up of dramatic music. Typical conventions consist of the context being gloomy, scary and have a lot of cross and jump cuts. This is what make the thriller genre so popular. Also they keep you in suspense and this is what a lot of people like so this type of genre makes a lot of money because people keep coming back for more.
